Proverbs 6:1-2 AMP
My son, if you have become surety (guaranteed a debt or obligation) for your neighbor, If you have given your pledge for [the debt of] a stranger or another [outside your family], [2] If you have been snared with the words of your lips, If you have been trapped by the speech of your mouth…
Beloved,
Are you aware that you can become your own snare? It’s true. One of the main ways men tend to entrap themselves is with the words of their mouth. Just as the Lord God Almighty is a speaking Spirit, you too are designed by the Creator to speak things into existence. Your words carry weight. It is a dangerous thing to go about speaking frivolously.
How then do we avoid trapping ourselves with our words? We must first learn not to be so quick to speak. Don’t speak out of emotion. Don’t respond to everything that comes your way. A safe reply is to say what Jesus would say if He was faced with your situation.
Speaking with the authority of God’s word is the safest way to respond. Speaking based on your emotions is dangerous. Consider this example of desperate Jephthah:
I will give to the Lord whatever comes out of my house to meet me when I return in triumph. I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.” So Jephthah led his army against the Ammonites, and the Lord gave him victory. He crushed the Ammonites, devastating about twenty towns from Aroer to an area near Minnith and as far away as Abel-keramim. In this way Israel defeated the Ammonites. When Jephthah returned home to Mizpah, his daughter came out to meet him, playing on a tambourine and dancing for joy. She was his one and only child; he had no other sons or daughters. When he saw her, he tore his clothes in anguish. “Oh, my daughter!” he cried out. “You have completely destroyed me! You’ve brought disaster on me! For I have made a vow to the Lord, and I cannot take it back.”
Judges 11:31-35, NLT
He did not have to lose his beloved daughter. But his mouth got him into trouble. Proverbs 6:2 says,
You are snared by the words of your mouth; You are taken by the words of your mouth.
Proverbs 6:2
Don’t let your mouth get you into trouble. Learn to speak by the Spirit of God. Develop the habit of speaking and confessing the word daily and in all situations and you will be less prone to speaking amiss and in ways that are a detriment to you and your destiny.
I commit you to God and to the word of His grace.
I call you NATIONS. I call you blessed.
