Where to Find Right Counsel IV
Though good advice lies deep within the heart, a person with understanding will draw it out.
Proverbs 20:5
Beloved,
We have discussed how to recognize right counsel. We have warned against accepting wrong counsel. Now let us discuss things that pervert right counsel.
One of the main things that perverts counsel is the idol in your heart.
The idol in your heart is whatever thought or thing you exalt above God and His Majesty, and His will and word for your life. It can cause you to misuse and abuse the very counsel that should have helped you until you turn away from your destiny.
Another thing that can distort and pervert right counsel is your emotion. If you are not careful to master your emotions, they will cause you to miss out on great counsel. Such is the case of Cain. See what scripture says:
“Why are you so angry?” the Lord asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected? You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.””
Genesis 4:6-7 NLT
God provided Cain with wise counsel. He cautioned that he should subdue his emotions or he would find himself encroached on by sin. And we know how his story ended. We will talk about a few more next time.
