Genesis 4:7 (Common English Bible)
If you do the right thing, won’t you be accepted? But if you don’t do the right thing, sin will be waiting at the door ready to strike! It will entice you, but you must rule over it.”
Beloved,
The story of Cain is a story of the physical manifestation of sin, and I believe that every believer that wants to live right must regularly read it. We must read this verse even in different versions and analyze every single word there.
In meditation this morning, I discovered that every human (including believers) gets invitation from sin. There is nobody that is free of its enticement until they are dead. However, our response to that enticement determines what we become eventually. In my years of dealing with people, I’ve heard people say things like, “I’m angry man. I get easily angry and if I don’t express it, I can have a heart attack”. The truth is that nobody becomes anything automatically, we become what we respond to. The person that becomes a thief only responds to the enticement of the sin called theft. An adulterer responds to the seed of adultery that the devil sow. If you see someone that is not stealing, it is not that the devil never enticed him to steal, it is just that the person chose not to respond to the enticement of sin.
Friends, what you respond to is what you become. The devil is not slack with his assignment. Some other versions of Genesis 4:7 say that sin lies in wait, wants to destroy you, wants to overpower you, desires you, is waiting at the door ready to strike, is waiting to attack you like a lion. The devil is deliberate and intentional in sowing the seed of sin in our heart and our response or non-response must be deliberate and intentional because our response or non-response is a powerful tool to master, rule over and dominate sin.
I commend you to God, and to the word of His grace.
I call you BLESSED. I call you NATIONS.
