[15] And did not God make [you and your wife] one [flesh]? Did not One make you and preserve your spirit alive? And why [did God make you two] one? Because He sought a godly offspring [from your union]. Therefore take heed to yourselves, and let no one deal treacherously and be faithless to the wife of his youth.

The Biblical definition of marriage–the definition of marriage by the One who created it: is the willingness of a man and a woman to become one to fulfill the purpose of God for bringing them together. Marriage is also a contractual legal agreement between a man and a woman to be together in a committed relationship with each other under God, until death parts them.
A functional family is a family whose foundation is in God. A functional family is only so because they are joined structurally and in covenant to abide and work together with one spirit and one mind- to pursue their God ordained purpose.
Active involvement is required for any functional relationship, especially marriage. As a spouse, you must not be passively involved in your own home or else your family will pay for your negligence. Relationships involves two or more variables, and this is why people can change over time. But even as you are changing, let it be that your desire for continuous growth and transformation is what is propelling or compelling that need for change.
Pay attention to the following if you want to have a functional marriage:
- Relationship: there must be intimacy and commitment to each other in that marriage.
- Purpose: there must be commitment to achieve divine purpose (general or specific) for that family.
- Service: every member must be ready to serve each other.
- Engagement: commitment to achieve the common goals of the family.
- Characteristic behavior: what is your family uniquely known for?
Chasing after the “perfect marriage” is as good as chasing fantasy. Instead of chasing the fantastical, chase wisdom. Gather it. Choose to accumulate right knowledge and understanding. These are the tools and weapons you will use to address the situations that confront you in marriage.
