Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.
Beloved,
I have been sharing with you how to preserve your children as a parent. These things I’m sharing with you are things you have control over, and you can begin to implement them immediately. Let’s look into more ways to protect your children.
- Communicate the revelation of God early to your child. It is such a joy when your child accepts Jesus as their Savior early in life. They are spared from so much sorrow.
- Let your children see you constantly taking a posture of dependence on God. Let them hear you pray and let them know when God answer your prayers so that they can be encouraged to pray to God for their own needs. Teach them to depend on God. Teach them to believe God for little things and big things. Even when you can afford to give them what they want, let them ask God for it and acknowledge that God is the ultimate Source, not you. Teach them to depend on God for their needs and model same for them. Teach them to be grateful and thankful to God when their needs are met.
- Keep correcting your children until they get it right and until they do the right thing by default or of their own initiative. Engage them in right and age appropriate activities. Withhold certain privileges from them if they don’t yet qualify for it.
- Observe your children closely in every setting and create teachable moments for your child. Encourage good behaviors in them and praise them for every initiative taken to act right.
- Correct immediately any misbehavior in your child and discipline as necessary. Never excuse bad attitude and bad behavior in your children.
- Vet their friends. By the help of the Holy Spirit, spotlight individuals that may become a snare to your children and pray them out of their lives. You may also need to take action to get them out of your child’s life. The Bible says that he who walks with the wise shall become wise, but the companion of fools shall be destroyed. Encourage your children to be friends with wise and godly people who will be a positive influence to them.
- In their upbringing, teach your children to be kind, considerate, thoughtful, respectful, obedient, honorable, generous, and compassionate. Praise every act of thoughtfulness in your child and don’t quench their spirit. Teach them also the value of excellence and hard work. Help them to gain mastery and to strive for excellence in all they do.
Beloved, this list is by far not exhaustive, meaning you can add on to it as you keep learning day by day. Do what you have control over with the help of the Holy Spirit and watch how your children will be sources of pride, joy, and peace for you, now and in the future.
